Choosing the Right Filter.  Understanding MERV Ratings: What They Mean for Your AC System

What is a MERV Rating? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It’s a standard developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The rating shows how effectively an air filter captures airborne particles. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter is at trapping

smaller particles.

How Does MERV Rating Affect Your AC?

Air Filtration: Higher MERV filters capture smaller particles like dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, and even some bacteria and viruses—leading to better indoor air quality.

Airflow: Filters with higher MERV ratings are denser, which can restrict airflow. This may cause your HVAC system to work harder, possibly reducing efficiency and increasing energy costs.

System Longevity: Using a filter with a MERV rating that’s too high for your system can strain the fan and other components, potentially shortening your HVAC system’s lifespan.

Choosing the Right MERV Rating

If you have allergies or respiratory issues, consider 

•   MERV 11–13 for significantly improved air quality. Pet owners may want to choose higher MERV ratings to help reduce pet dander and odors. For the average household, 

•   MERV 8 is often sufficient for general dust control and protecting your system. Always refer to your unit’s manual or ask a qualified HVAC technician for the best MERV range for your model.

•   Select a MERV rating that gives you good filtration without putting unnecessary strain on your system.
