Utah's First All-Girls High School Flag Football League Launches This Fall

Empowering Young Women Through the Game of Football |
Football has long been a sport dominated by men, leaving many young women on the sidelines.
This fall, the Utah High School Girls Football Association is set to change that narrative by launching the state's first all-girls high school flag football league.
Open to girls from eighth to twelfth grade, this league aims to provide a platform for young women to engage in a sport traditionally reserved for their male counterparts.
Ryan NeVille, the founder of the Utah High School Girls Football Association, initiated this endeavor in August of last year.
Inspired by his daughter's participation in a tackle football league, NeVille recognized the potential for a similar flag football league tailored for girls in Utah.
During the summer, he led a group of girls to the Utah Summer Games in Cedar City, where the enthusiasm and talent on display solidified his commitment to this cause.
"Witnessing these young women compete at such a high level was truly inspiring," NeVille remarked.
"The experience at the Summer Games underscored the demand and passion for this movement, and it's only the beginning."
Flag football offers unique opportunities beyond high school, unlike women's tackle football, which has limited avenues for continued play.
"Flag football opens doors to professional leagues," NeVille explained.
"Salt Lake City boasts a professional women's flag football league, and with the sport's inclusion in the Olympics, the timing couldn't be better.
Utah is home to exceptional athletes ready to seize these opportunities."
Starting in September, the association plans to engage in competitive games against other leagues nationwide.
While 17 states have officially recognized flag football as a high school sport, Utah has yet to do so.
NeVille and his team are dedicated to advocating for this recognition, aiming to pave the way for future generations.
Beyond potential official recognition, NeVille emphasizes that flag football is an inclusive sport, welcoming girls regardless of their athletic background.
"Football offers a role for everyone," NeVille stated.
"While we'll identify our quarterbacks, the game encompasses various positions.
You don't need to be the fastest or the strongest.
It's about teamwork and finding your place within it."
The Utah High School Girls Football Association is committed to preparing young women for potential careers or scholarships in flag football, while also striving to have the sport officially recognized in Utah.
Registration is open until September 8, with games commencing on September 15.
