Salt Lake City Ranks Among Top Five Most Dangerous Cities for Halloween

Recent Study Highlights Safety Concerns for Trick-or-Treaters in the Capital

Salt Lake City has been identified as the fifth most dangerous city in the United States for trick-or-treating, according to a recent study by SafeHome.org.

The study evaluated 161 cities using key safety metrics, including crime rates, pedestrian fatalities, the number of registered sex offenders, and the presence of local law enforcement.

Here are the top five most dangerous cities for trick-or-treating:

1. Memphis, Tennessee

2. Richmond, Virginia

3. Little Rock, Arkansas

4. Oakland, California

5. Salt Lake City, Utah

Several factors contribute to Salt Lake City's ranking.

Comparing Salt Lake City to the safest city, Yonkers, New York, reveals some differences.

In Yonkers, there were no pedestrian fatalities reported in a one-year period.

In contrast, Salt Lake City reported 0.3 pedestrian fatalities per 10,000 residents.

Violent and property crime rates also play a role.

In Yonkers, property crime per 10,000 residents was 101.5, and violent crime was 31.2.

However, in Salt Lake City, property crime was 520 per 10,000 residents, and violent crime was 86.42 per 10,000 residents.

Another significant factor is the high number of registered sex offenders in Salt Lake City.

The city has 168 offenders per 10,000 residents, the second highest in the nation according to SafeHome.org.

Here are the top five safest cities for trick-or-treating:

1. Yonkers, New York

2. Naperville, Illinois

3. New York, New York

4. Gilbert, Arizona

5. Frisco, Texas

In response to these concerns, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has taken proactive measures to enhance safety during Halloween.

In October 2024, the SLCPD issued a warning about an increase in car burglaries near haunted house attractions, particularly around 800 South 600 West.

Since September 1, 2024, there have been 20 reported car burglaries in this area, compared to just four during the same period in 2023.

To address this issue, the SLCPD has increased patrols and provided safety tips to the community.

Additionally, the SLCPD hosted its annual Halloween Fun Fest on October 25, 2024, at the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building Plaza.

This free, family-friendly event aimed to provide a safe environment for children to enjoy Halloween festivities.

Community members are encouraged to follow safety guidelines during Halloween, such as trick-or-treating in groups, wearing reflective clothing, and being cautious when crossing streets.

By staying informed and vigilant, residents can help ensure a safer Halloween experience for everyone.
