Public Voices Concerns Over Salt Lake County's Proposed Property Tax Increase

Residents express apprehension as officials deliberate on a significant tax hike

Salt Lake County residents are voicing their concerns regarding a proposed property tax increase of nearly 20%, as officials deliberate on the 2026 budget.

Mayor Jenny Wilson has put forth a plan that would raise property taxes by approximately 19.63%, translating to an average increase of about $7.28 per household per month. This proposal aims to address inflationary pressures and rising operational costs for essential county services.

During a recent public hearing, community members expressed apprehension about the financial burden this increase would impose. One resident, Heather Jack, questioned, "Are they going to raise our wages? Because everything's so expensive right now, it's just going to make things worse. People are already struggling."

Financial experts have weighed in on the proposal. Billy Hesterman, president of the Utah Taxpayers Association, noted, "It's kind of in the neighborhood of what we're seeing other entities do, and it certainly is less than what inflation would be from 2019 to now. But it is a big number, and it does beg the question of, 'Have you really dug through that budget enough and made sure that you know you're only providing what's essential?'"

The Salt Lake County Council held a public hearing on December 9, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the County Government Center to discuss the proposed tax increase. Residents were encouraged to attend and share their perspectives on the matter.

As the county continues to experience steady growth, officials argue that the tax increase is necessary to maintain essential services and infrastructure. However, the proposal has sparked a broader conversation about balancing fiscal responsibility with the financial well-being of residents.
