Major Upgrades Underway at Liberty Park's Rotary Play Park

Salt Lake City's beloved playground embarks on a transformative journey to enhance inclusivity and adventure.

Salt Lake City's cherished Rotary Play Park at Liberty Park is set to undergo a significant transformation, beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2025. This ambitious $5 million project aims to revitalize the playground, originally established in 2003 to honor the legacy of the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games.

The renovation will introduce a plethora of new features designed to cater to children of all ages and abilities. Planned additions include a climbing tower, group pendulum swing, wheelchair-accessible spin carousel, splash zone, sand tables, meadow maze, in-ground jumpers, swings, slides, shaded seating, picnic areas, and natural play zones. Furthermore, adaptive interpretive elements will be incorporated to assist individuals with vision, hearing, and communication differences. This comprehensive redesign is the culmination of extensive community engagement. Over 1,700 residents from Salt Lake City and surrounding areas provided input through surveys, focus groups, and public meetings between summer 2023 and spring 2024. The feedback emphasized desires for more nature-inspired elements, increased shade, adventurous play options, and a space where all children feel included. Kim Shelley, Director of Salt Lake City's Department of Public Lands, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "This project is about investing in a play space that welcomes every child and family. This new design is a direct reflection of what we heard from residents." Funding for the renovation is sourced from the $85 million Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation Bond approved by voters in November 2022, with $2 million allocated specifically for this project. The remaining funds are derived from parks impact fees. ([slc.gov](https://www.slc.gov/blog/2025/08/28/liberty-parks-rotary-play-park-begins-complete-transformation/?utm_source=openai))

During the construction period, which is expected to last until summer 2026, families are encouraged to visit alternative playgrounds. Nearby options include the Rice Pavilion Playground located at the northeast corner of Liberty Park and Herman L. Franks Park at 1371 S 700 E. This renovation is part of a broader initiative to enhance Liberty Park, a 143-year-old landmark spanning 80 acres. Other ongoing projects include the transformation of the Seven Canyons Fountain into a dry art feature, slated for completion by mid-October. As Salt Lake City continues to invest in its public spaces, the revamped Rotary Play Park promises to be a vibrant, inclusive destination for families and children for years to come.
