Salt Lake City revitalizes trail section to ensure community safety and enjoyment |
After a temporary closure initiated in April 2025, a segment of the Jordan River Parkway Trail between Cottonwood Park and 700 North is set to reopen on Friday, July 11.
This closure allowed Salt Lake City officials to address pressing environmental and public safety concerns.
During the closure, the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands undertook extensive efforts to clear overgrown vegetation and remove debris, enhancing visibility and cleanliness along the trail.
Significant restoration work was also completed on the riverbanks to rehabilitate the natural habitat.
In a strategic move to improve safety, a portion of the trail between 500 North and 700 North was relocated to the west side of the Jordan River.
This new 14-foot-wide asphalt path aims to reduce user conflicts and provide a safer experience for pedestrians and cyclists.
To further bolster security, the Salt Lake City Police Department has increased patrols along the trail, enforcing ordinances against camping after park hours and connecting individuals in need with appropriate services.
The Utah Department of Public Safety and Salt Lake City Park Rangers will also maintain regular patrols to ensure ongoing safety.
Additional measures, including the installation of public safety cameras and improved lighting, are planned as part of the city's comprehensive public safety plan.
These enhancements reflect a concerted effort to restore the trail as a safe and welcoming space for the community.
Residents are encouraged to report any non-emergency illegal activities by calling 801-799-3000.
For emergencies, dial 911.
As the trail reopens, the city remains committed to maintaining a secure and enjoyable environment for all users.
