Recent Study Highlights Safety Concerns for Trick-or-Treaters in the Beehive State
As Halloween approaches, families in Salt Lake City are preparing for a night of costumes and candy.
However, a recent study has raised concerns about the safety of trick-or-treaters in the area.
According to a report by SafeHome.org, Salt Lake City ranks fifth among the most dangerous cities in the United States for Halloween activities.
The study evaluated 161 cities based on key safety metrics, including crime rates, pedestrian fatalities, the number of registered sex offenders, and the presence of local law enforcement.
The top five most dangerous cities for trick-or-treating are:
1. Memphis, Tennessee
2. Richmond, Virginia
3. Little Rock, Arkansas
4. Oakland, California
5. Salt Lake City, Utah
Several factors contribute to Salt Lake City's ranking.
In 2024, the city reported 1,838 violent crimes, resulting in a violent crime rate of 864.23 per 100,000 residents.
Additionally, there were 11,105 property crimes, leading to a property crime rate of 5,221.58 per 100,000 residents.
These figures are significantly higher than the national averages.
Another major concern is the high number of registered sex offenders in the city.
As of October 13, 2025, there were 3,579 registered sex offenders living in Salt Lake City, resulting in a ratio of 54 residents to every offender.
Despite these statistics, local authorities are taking steps to ensure a safe Halloween experience.
The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has announced its annual Halloween Fun Fest, scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building Plaza.
This family-friendly event aims to provide a safe environment for children and includes various activities and public safety booths.
SLCPD emphasizes the importance of community engagement and proactive measures to enhance public safety during the holiday.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to accompany their children while trick-or-treating, stick to well-lit areas, and remain vigilant.
By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, families can enjoy a fun and safe Halloween in Salt Lake City. |
